Scan-and-Solve for Rhino

Simulate Early, Simulate Often... In Rhino

its seems that i cant create or "bake" a deflected geometry?

i was hoping to use this tool to create some catenary systems like Gaudi, but i cant manipulate or select the simulated geometry or i missing something? any hidden option in there?

i dont see anything like this in the wish forum so please add this to the list... i looks like it'll be a very easy thing to do.

if i get a corruption installation or something like that.. sorry for the trouble...

Manuel,

At the moment, there is no way for users to "bake" the deflected geometry into the Rhino document.  Some forms of "baking" would be very easy to do, others could be more challenging.  For example, adding the ability to output the deformed display mesh would be easy, deforming the original NURBS b-rep and outputting that would be less than easy.

Would you want the deformed geometry superimposed over the original in the document or something else?

This sounds like a good idea.  Thank you for the suggestion!    I moved this discussion into "wishlist" category.

...  though I do not think that you will be able to use Scan&Solve to perform Gaudi's experiments -- at least not yet.  The reason is that S&S performs linear static analysis,  which assumes that geometric changes are very small.  The deflected view magnifies them dramatically (usually by thousands of times) in order to provide visual feedback to the user, but this deformation is not physical.   To perform Gaudi's experiments, you would need to simulate large (physical) deformations.

"Bake" option for the deflected geometry is now available in the latest build of S&S!   ... it is a mesh,  but you can also save it as STL file  for 3D printing!

Hi Vadim

Is there a way of saving the texture (and mapping) of the baked component? (Mesh is fine). 3D printing with starch allows textures in VRML2 format.

Also, I'm missing something obvious with the "Mark -> Point" function... once marked, where is the data displayed or used please?

[Apologies - found it. Dimension scale was still set very small]

SnS certainly starting to earn its wings here; Currently working on a mechanism housing (HP Zinc cast). Redesigning for different materials for quotes to manufacture locally (LP Zn, Al, PP-GF30, PA-GF20). More careful design is helping us keep component costs down.

Do you know if an injection mould flow analysis plug-in is available for Rhino?

Thanks!

Ian

Ian-

At present, the texture is not saved, as it only exists while the SnS plugin is operating.  I'll have to do some digging to see if texture/material information can be made persistent outside the plugin.

With respect to injection flow analysis for Rhino, I'm not aware of any.  Google searches do bring up interesting information about a rhinoceros molded in basalt in the state of Washington... probably not what you are looking for.  :-)

Hi Michael

Been looking for a rhino moulded in basalt for some time now :-)

The reason I'm asking about textured 3D prints is because increasingly, R&D is becoming a selling point. Physical models are deal clinchers (especially when there's a story, starting with scamps, through to early schematic drawings, through to technical drawings, mockups and renders).

I see a row of bell jars in our showroom with little FEA models in them. That would just scream "carefully engineered products"without a technically bewildering presentation.

I realise there must be a long wish list, of course, but you know, if you've got 5 minutes to spare :-)

Have a great festive season!

Ian
