Simulate Early, Simulate Often... In Rhino

Hi Sirs,

first of all, congratulations for the software. I'm very happy with the easy way of analysing. I would like to tell me how could I calculate a model with more than 20000 mesh. I have a lot of worked done with natural complex geometries, which I only have OBJ files with hundreds of thousands of meshes. It is for me a hard limitation to not be possible to go upper 20000 . The mesh is right, I mean, Rhino considers a closed volume without problems, but I cannot select with SnS, because it is not a solid standard. Can you help me, please?

For example my mesh descrived by rhino:

You can try using the command "Offset Surface".
I fear that an area as complex as yours is complicated.
A compromise solution might be to:
1 - divide the "snail " in sub parts
2 - apply the command "Offset Surface"
3 - Boolean union,
4 - apply SnS.

In other words to work with SnS "you have to give depth to the structure. "

Some time ago I suggested that we add a command to analyze the surface, thethickness as the first by entering numerical data and then calculate the stress.
Currently the only way to deal with complex surfaces and manipulate them withGrasshopper (though not easy).

20,000 triangles is not that much,  but 20,000 NURBs faces is a lot ... which is the reason for this limitation in Rhino.   It is not something we can change now, but eventually Scan&Solve will work directly on meshes, removing this limitation.     ... on the other hand,  does your mesh need to be so fine?   You can use ReduceMesh command in Rhino to  coarsen the mesh, while preserving much of the shape information ...  Try it. 

I thought we removed the 20,000 limitation in V5. If not, I'll remind them.

It should work with just a warning that you might want to save first.

Hi, Yes it is true, it seems in v5 that only ask you to save and then works. Now my problem is "Windows doesn't have enough memory"  I will try to decrease the number of meshes and do it in v5.




PD: If SnS can work directly with mesh in short future, it would be great for my work with complx geometries.

Jordi,  have you tried SnSMesh?  Does it do what you wanted?   We would be interested in getting your feedback.   Also,  we are looking for user models that we could use for demonstration purposes.   If you have anything that you are able to share,  please let us know.   Thank you.
