topological optimization in 3D part using Scan and solve, is it possible?

Dear all, 

I went to a conference last week about how simulation can help now to the designers. In this point, it was said a relatively new option: topological optimization of a part. Going from solid to an improved part with less material. 

I would like to know if there is any possibility to integrate any other software or develop something with GH or any other tool that can do this kind of optimization. Example of software: FEMAP

Ah yes,  topology optimization!   Indeed,  "form finding" is one of the most appealing applications of "inverse analysis" -- instead of analyzing a given shape,  you want to find a best possible shape given restraints and loads.    Scan&Solve is well suited for this task because it computes on a spatial grid that encloses the original shape and does not depend on any particular discretization of the shape itself.   In fact,   the pictures below shows an example of topology optimization problem computed with Scan&Solve in a university research project.    

But building a commercial product is not trivial, because there are many different techniques, and using topology optimization requires deeper understanding of mechanics and fine tuning of various optimization parameters.    What we could probably do is to create SnS Script that would support some form of topology optimization and experimentation -- if there is sufficient interest from Scan&Solve customers.   Tell us more about what you would like to explore!   Examples and description of specific problems would be very helpful. 

A good place to learn more about topology optimization is at this website which lists books and various available software, both free and commercial.
